Virginia Community College Articulation Policy - Effective for students enrolling Fall Semester 2006 and after:

As a result of Christopher Newport University moving the review of transfer students to competitive admission standards CNU has developed guaranteed Articulation Agreements for guaranteed admission with the Virginia Community College system.  Additional information regarding guaranteed admission may be obtained with your community college representatives.

Generally, admission to CNU is selective and an applicant is judged against the merits of others in the pool of applicants at the time of admission.

Completion of a transfer-oriented (A.A., A.S., or A.A.&S.) associate degree from a Virginia community college will satisfy CNU lower-level Liberal Learning Core requirements except for other prerequisite program or graduation requirements which apply to all students.

A student who is offered admission to CNU and has completed a university parallel program (Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, or the Associate of Arts & Sciences) at a Virginia Community College or at Richard Bland College should anticipate the following:

  • To transfer only courses, with a grade of "C" or better, that have a CNU equivalent;
  • Courses completed at the VCCS with a grade of "C-" or lower will not transfer to CNU and that/those course(s) must be repeated if it is a required course;
  • To complete at least one 201 level foreign language course
  • No more than 66 semester hours, depending on the student's academic history, from a two-year institution will transfer to CNU, provided that the courses were completed with a grade of "C" or better;
  • To receive junior level class standing;
  • To have completed all lower-level CNU general education requirements (excludes graduation requirements, upper-level requirements, and concentration/minor/major requirements);
  • To complete concentration (if applicable), minor, and major requirements in effect at CNU at the time of the student's first term of enrollment at CNU;

Entrance into CNU majors or fields of study is competitive. Acceptance into the University does not imply admission to these programs. Transfer students and currently enrolled CNU students are treated identically with regard to admission to competitive programs.
